learning how to breathe again:
an exploration of grief
Leftovers, learning how to breathe again: an exploration of grief,
is an original book design concept created during an initial course
at the ArtCenter College of Design in the Masters program. Inspired
by the nature of grief and how beauty can be found in the midst of
what is broken, photography emerged as the primary method of
capture vulnerable moments within the book exploration. Below
are some brief captures of the overall experience.
Book Cover Design
& Content Examples
The Leftovers symbol was hand created and illustrated to convey a single teardrop, lengthening out over an elongated path. This is to represent the fact that grief can feel like a never ending tear, tangled in a web of emotion. Fragments of beautiful, glistening memories may appear throughout the grieving process, and it is those pieces that one must hold
on to in allowing for some level of healing. The content further reiterates this message and approach, with the somber nature having occasional bursts of color.

Book Release Poster
The book release poster for Leftovers, learning how to breathe again: an exploration of grief, was hand tiled and pasted together to have the feeling of extreme fragility and later photographed. Using this fine arts approach, the
emotional side of piecing together what was ‘broken’ in form, enabled the concept of the book as a whole to come through. While grief may messy, when puts back together the broken pieces, over time, something beautiful can result.
